Raindrops: A Poem

Raindrops

The best way to time travel is to fall.

You must be brave. Jumping from a swing or down the last three steps of a stairwell will only take you back a few seconds. You may have the sense that you have been here, in this moment, before. But you will dismiss this feeling and go about your day as if nothing extraordinary has happened.

A bridge is, by far, the best option at your disposal. It is a much farther drop than any mere window ledge has to offer. The more momentum you build as you plummet, the more years will slip through your fingers like rainwater.

You must have faith that your bones will remain unbroken when you jump, but you must also be prepared for hearts to shatter with the force of your impact. You do not have to worry about your own heart. You see, time travelers often have broken hearts, or none at all. It is impossible to walk through history and remain untouched by war, disease, famine, and kindness.

Do not worry for them.

Time travelers have long since forgotten how to cry.

Revelation: A Poem

I stare past the sightless sheep.
The ones with enough naivete to
think repeating honeyed prayers
will somehow make all this okay.
I remain silent, because
I know better than to plead
with someone who’s stopped listening.
Dad squeezes my hand,
warming the bitter words;
“She’s with God now.”
It seems like a bad time to bring up
that I don’t believe in fairy tales any longer.
Outside, the sun is black and unforgiving
And I gaze into its blinding challenge
Seeing the truth for the first time.

Icarus: A Poem

The family stood near the stone
faces wet and eyes hooded
as the masses swarmed around them
clasping hands and muttering phrases
they’d heard a thousand times before
Smiles tug at the corners of their mouths
but they cannot bring themselves
to share in the joy of community
and action
nor can they dance under the soft glow of the overhead light
There are words drifting in from somewhere close by
but they cannot hear
Instead, they can think only of darkness
And broken wings.
